Custom vs ready-made engagement rings, compared honestly

The question every couple asks and no page answers with numbers: is custom more expensive? Usually not — at the same stone and metal specification, a made-to-order ring is typically the same price or cheaper than traditional showroom ready-made, because you're not paying for the showroom. Here's the full comparison, including the cases where ready-made genuinely wins.

The cost question, answered with structure

"Custom costs more" is a hangover from when custom meant a master jeweller hand-fabricating one piece at city-workshop rates. Modern made-to-order works differently, and the cost structures explain everything:

The same ring — 1.00 ct G VS1 certified round, 18ct gold solitaire — three ways to buy it, late 2026
RouteTypical priceWhat drives the number
Traditional showroom, ready-made≈ $14,000–$18,000*Keystone-plus retail markup carrying the showroom: stock financing, prime rent, commissions. The ring existed before you did; you pay for its wait.
Online discounter, ready-made≈ $9,000–$12,000*Cheap can be genuine here — but the setting is where the saving hides: unstated metal weight, no published claw or shank spec, "small stones excluded" warranties.
Honey & Lee, made to order$12,750, build publishedNo stock, no showroom, no commissions; the stone is bought the day you approve it. Every line is published, down to the margin.

*Indicative ranges derived from standard retail markup structures (explained with real numbers here) applied to current certified-stone prices; individual retailers vary. Our figure is an actual published build.

Everything else that differs

When ready-made is genuinely the right call

A custom studio telling you custom is always right is a salesperson, not an adviser. Buy ready-made when:

  • You're proposing this week. No made-to-order process honest about its timeline can help you. Buy well — certified stone, itemised receipt — and consider a custom wedding band later.
  • The budget is under about $3,000. Design time and one-off making have a floor; below it, volume manufacturing simply wins on value.
  • It's a genuine antique. An original Art Deco ring is an original; a reproduction isn't. (We'll happily restore or re-shank one instead.)
  • They've fallen for a specific designer's signature piece. If the exact ring exists and it's the one, buy the one. Copying another designer's signature design is something we decline anyway.

When custom wins

Everywhere else — and especially in the $8,000–$20,000 bracket, where the maths flips in your favour: the showroom premium you're not paying becomes a better stone, a heavier shank, or several thousand dollars that stay in your pocket. You get the stone chosen on its certificate rather than its cabinet lighting, a setting engineered for the next fifty years, and a ring nobody else is wearing.

The honest decision sequence: set the total budget first, read what that budget actually buys, then take the 10-question checklist to whichever studios you're considering — including us.
