How long does a custom engagement ring take?

A custom engagement ring typically takes 4–8 weeks from approved design to delivery. At Honey & Lee it's 4–6 weeks, tracked at every stage — and because most of the industry won't put a number in writing, this page walks through exactly where those weeks go, what stretches them, and the cut-off dates that matter if you're proposing at Christmas.

What jewellers actually quote (October 2026)

Collected from published lead times and our own quote comparisons across the Melbourne and Sydney market:

Custom engagement ring lead times, Australian market, late 2026
WhoPublished lead time
Design-led bespoke studios6–10 weeks, some up to 10 weeks total with stone curation
Large lab-grown retailers30 business days after CAD approval; 8–10 weeks quoted for full custom
Fastest in-house workshopsAbout 10 business days — rare, and typically from an existing design library
Honey & Lee4–6 weeks from approved design, tracked; you see every stage change

Watch for the fine print when you compare: many quotes start the clock at CAD approval, not at your first meeting — which quietly adds one to three weeks of design time to the real answer.

The honest week-by-week timeline

A typical Honey & Lee ring, consultation to hand-over
StageWhenWhat happens
ConsultationDay 045 minutes in the studio or over video. Style, budget, timeline, ring size.
Stone & designWeek 1We source 3–5 certified stones from the cutters in Surat and compare them with you; Matilda sketches, then models the setting in CAD around your pick.
ApprovalWeek 2You approve the renders and the exact stone (this is when the stone is bought, at that day's price). A printed try-on model follows where sizing is uncertain.
CraftingWeeks 3–4Our Bangkok atelier casts, sets and hand-finishes the ring to the published specification, then photographs it under magnification.
QC & freightWeek 5You approve the QC photos, the balance is paid, and the ring travels by insured vault-to-door courier to Melbourne.
Hand-overWeeks 5–6Our Melbourne bench inspects the ring against the approved design and the spec, then it's collected in the studio or couriered to you anywhere in Australia.

You're never guessing which stage your ring is in — each change is confirmed to you as it happens: design, stone, casting, setting, shipping. Offshore making is only unnerving when it's invisible.

What genuinely makes a ring take longer

  • Unusual stones. A specific carat of Australian sapphire or an uncommon fancy cut can add one to two weeks of sourcing. We'll tell you at the consultation, not after the deposit.
  • Design rounds. The timeline starts at approved design. Two or three render revisions are normal and healthy; ten are a sign the brief needs another conversation — either way the clock is honest about it.
  • Peak season. November and December are the industry's crunch. Ateliers everywhere queue up; couriers slow down.
  • Hand engraving and special finishes. Budget an extra week for milgrain-heavy or engraved pieces.

Proposal-season cut-offs

Working back from a 4–6 week build plus design time:

  • Christmas or New Year proposal: have your design approved by early November — which means a first consultation by late October.
  • Valentine's Day: design approved by the first week of January.
  • A specific date any other time: start the conversation 8–10 weeks out and you'll have margin to spare.

Tighter than that? Ask anyway. Sometimes the answer is yes — a solitaire with an in-stock stone moves faster than a pavé trilogy — and when the answer is no, we'll say no before you've paid anything, and tell you which kind of ring could make your date.

Quick answers

Can I pay to rush it?

We don't sell a paid express tier. If a date is achievable we build to it at the normal price; if it isn't, money doesn't change the metallurgy.

Does a lab-grown stone speed things up?

Sometimes, by a few days — lab-grown stones in popular sizes are easier to source quickly. The making time is identical.

How long do wedding bands take?

Usually faster: plain bands often land in 3–4 weeks, diamond-set bands in 4–6.
